 Four Practice Sessions for U6

Minimize

  FIRST PRACTICE SESSION (additional info:Coaching Young Players

(THEME:  Introduce9-Step Practice Routine)

 

Before Practice: 

 -Arrive early with another adult and Inspect the field (Safety)

 -Get to know players by name and socialize

 -Encourage players to get to know each other and socialize

 -Teach them to play a FUN game

 

Step 1. BEGIN THE PRACTICE

  •   Have an ‘official’ beginning (Teach them a team cheer) 

  •   Cover practice session rules (Concentration and Discipline)

  •   Tell them what they will learn (Theme – Explanation)

  •   Show them what they will learn (Theme – Demonstration)

Step 2. WARM UP  

     -Each player with a ball and two cones

     -Teach them the ‘Figure 8 Stretch Routine’

 

Step. 3. 1 1    Players Learn Using Stoppages

     Cooperative time Let them know there will be stoppages.

        -teach them how to play the  1 1 and 1 vs. 1 games

  • Show & Tell them …What the field must look like.

 -How to make a ‘goal at least 3 yd. wide                   

 -How to step off the distance between goals – at least 10 yd. apart

 -How to step off the distance between adjacent goals - at least 5 yd. apart

 Show and Tell them… How to play the 1 vs. 1 game.

  • -‘How to’ start the game -- The Serve 
  • -‘How to’ attack the opponent’s goal – 1st Attacker
  • -‘How to’ defend one’s own goal – 1st Defender
  • -‘How to’ continue playing after a goal is scored (no stoppages)
  • -‘How the game is stopped – The Signal
  • -‘How to’ report the score – Active or Inactive Rest
  • -‘How to’ rotate – Getting ready to face the next opponent

  Step 4. 1 vs. 1 Coach is Verbally Silent

     Competitive Game – LET THEM KNOW THERE WILL BE NO STOPPAGES

     -Players attempting to score against each other.

 

Step 5. Half-time Break

     -Teach them what will take place: Rest, Water, Review of the first half of  practice

     -Teach them what to expect in Second Half of Practice: Small Sided Games and Scrimmage

 

Step 6. Small Sided Games– Cooperative and Competitive

     Cooperative - Give instructions while they are playing.

     Competitive – Be verbally silent and take notes.

 

Step 7. Scrimmage– Cooperative and Competitive

     Cooperative - Give instructions while they are playing.

     Competitive – Be verbally silent and take notes.

 

Step 8. COOL DOWN -   Stretch and give Individual Compliments

 

Step 9. END PRACTICE

Compliment the Team and Review what was learned.

      - Assign them homework -- Play 1vs.1 at home

 After Practice: 

     -Make sure all the players have a ride home.

     -Leave the field cleaner than it was when you arrived.

     -Be the last person to leave the facility.

SECOND PRACTICE SESSION  (THEME:  Teaching …9-Step Practice Routine)  Before Practice:  

-Arrive early with another adult and Inspect the field (Safety)
